Physiological effects

N-acetylcysteine, or NAC, is a synthetic derivative of the naturally occurring amino acid cysteine, which was originally developed as a cough medicine due to its expectorant properties.

Cysteine is one of the 20 most common amino acids and is found in protein-rich foods, e.g. from eggs and meat, legumes and sunflower seeds. Cysteine is a so-called semi-essential amino acid because the body can produce some of it from other amino acids. In the body, cysteine can be found e.g. from the keratin in the skin, nails and hair.

NAC is converted in the body to cysteine, which is needed for the formation of glutathione. Glutathione is a first-line antioxidant that is essential for the body and is found in each of our cells.

Glutathione boosts immunity and supports the functioning of the body’s defense system. Antioxidants especially prevent oxidative stress caused by free radicals, i.e. the oxidation and damage of cells, and promote the transport of substances harmful to the body out of the cells.

Quercetin is a natural flavonoid that is found in many foods, e.g. in black and green tea, apple, berries and onion. Quercetin has traditionally been used to support immunity, especially during the pollen season.

The quercetin contained in the Vitacell® NAC Quercetin C dietary supplement comes from the above-ground parts of the Japanese pagoda tree (Sophoria japonica).

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin necessary for humans, which acts as a key antioxidant in the body, i.e. protects cells from harmful oxidation caused by free radicals. Vitamin C helps reduce fatigue and exhaustion.

Vitamin C enhances the absorption of NAC and quercetin promotes the health benefits of vitamin C. All three ingredients synergistically support each other’s beneficial effects, effectively promoting the body’s immune response.
